The IOC’s first female president?

Could Nawal El Moutawakel break with, and make, history?
By Alan Abrahamson | Posted: Mar 10, 8:28a ET | Updated: Mar 10, 8:28a ET

ABU DHABI — Here is one measure of how far the cause of women in sports has come:

They held a news conference here Tuesday at the Emirates Palace hotel in advance of Wednesday’s Laureus awards. The dais, from right to left: Edwin Moses, the incomparable 400-meter hurdles champion from the 1970s and 1980s who is now chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy chairman; Mohammed Ibrahim Al Mahmood, general secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council; and Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco, the 1984 Los Angeles Games women’s 400-meter hurdles champion who over the past dozen years has become one of the most influential leaders within the International Olympic Committee.

Here is one measure of how far the cause of women in sports has yet to go:

“In Abu Dhabi,” the Laureus organizers cautioned in inviting the members of the press to a photo op at the hotel’s soccer field (it’s the Gulf – the hotel, $3 billion to build, has its own FIFA-caliber field), “it is not generally accepted that photos are taken of women or girls.

Skateboarding in the Olympics

Tony Hawk says it’s time
By Alan Abrahamson | Posted: Mar 10, 8:46a ET | Updated: Mar 10, 8:45a ET

ABU DHABI — Watching Shaun White throw down in the men’s halfpipe in Vancouver, you had to wonder, for perhaps the gazillionth time: why isn’t skateboarding in the Summer Games?

Lots of reasons, actually, all of them having to do with the International Olympic Committee’s politics and policies, but then there’s this — the IOC is purportedly on a quest to connect with young people, and young people like skateboarding. Like, a lot.

“It should be [in the Games] immediately,” Tony Hawk, the skateboarding pioneer, said here Wednesday in an interview ahead of the Laureus awards, Hawk having now achieved such standing in his professional and charitable works that he’s one of the 46 members of the Laureus academy.

Which, along with his enormous street cred and financial acumen, gives him license to speak even more frankly: “As far as the Summer Games go, the Olympics needs skateboarding more than skateboarding needs them — as far as getting a cool factor.

“You see what snowboarding has done in the Winter Olympics. Skateboarding could do the exact same thing for the Summer Olympics.”

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) — Lindsey Vonn will head into the final downhill race of the season with a chance to claim the overall World Cup title for the third straight season.

Russia facing cold, hard reality of anti-doping era

Russia’s paltry medal count in Vancouver sparked political outrage back home and it is clear the nation has not figured out how to adapt its outdated Soviet system to 21st century anti-doping realities. With the next Winter Olympics headed to Sochi, the Russians will go all-out to win in 2014, and with the U.S. as its main target, the next Games could have a Cold War feel.
By Alan Abrahamson, Universal Sports | Posted: Mar 9, 5:18a ET | Updated: Mar 9, 7:18a ET

So the Russian team finishes sixth in the overall medals count at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, with 15. By Russian — and Soviet-era — standards, that’s dismal.

It’s so poor that heads roll back home and the prime minister, Vladimir Putin, chairing a meeting last Friday, says the government had spent about $117 million over the past three years preparing for Vancouver and declares, ominously, “Maybe the money was spent not on what was needed but instead on what someone wanted to spend it on.”

Skipping World Cup Finals

In his latest blog, Bode Miller announces he is ending his season early and won’t be skiing at World Cup Finals this week in Germany. The Olympic gold medalist said his ankle injury is still bothering him. He’s in San Diego now getting treatment and is going to take the rest of the season off to rest and recuperate. Miller is undecided about next season.

SAN DIEGO — I decided I’m not going back to Europe to close out the season. My ankle is still bothering me so I’m going to stay in San Diego and get treatment. I’ve been getting saline and glucose injections at different spots around the joint to help it heal.  It’s become a chronic injury because I skied on it for so long when it was injured and it never had a chance to heal. Now it hurts when I do different things and especially when I ski. I need to take some time off to let it heal properly. When that’s all sorted out, I’ll go back over to Europe and do some testing.
